The house of Cristodoulos Kannaouros is built in the southeast and outskirts of the core of the old village. The area is quiet and isolated. That’s why the house was chosen by the guerillas fighters for a hide out.

The house was built from natural Troodos stone. It follows the shape of the hill that it has the church of Saint Marina at its top. It consists of 2 levels. The upper level, the living space for the family, and the lower level, for the household animals. After the death of Cristodoulos Kannaouros the house was taken by the children of Kannaouros and at the end was bought by the village’s Committee. The village’s Committee by theirs expenses and with the professional study of a museologist they made the house a museum of the EOKA liberation struggle. The museum has the name of Christodoulos Kannaouros in memory and honors him.

The 45th squadron of marines, which had its headquarters in Platres, was the one that carried out the mission against the house of Christodoulos Kannaouros.

From an old period uniform, a colleague of ours removed and gave us these insignias to display in our museum collection.

Another EOKA’s loot is this backpack that the British Army used to carry a small radio. The rebels had this backpack for carrying ammunition.

When the British troops collided with the students and schools pupils, for repression of the numerus demonstrations in the streets, it was a real warThe students and pupils through stones and the British troops responded with tear gas.

After the end of the “battle” the surrounding area was a real battle zone and anything you can thing you can find in the streets.

Under the floor of the house Kannaouros duck a hideout for hiding guns and ammunitions and EOKAs guerillas fighters. The entrance of the hideout was from the stable, the room at the rivers side of the house.

Georgios Kazanos had to be in the hideout at the morning of the attack from the British troops but he stayed with Kannaouros in the room.

Για να μπαίνει αέρας εντός του κρησφύγετου πάνω ακριβώς, εκεί που τώρα είναι το γυαλί, υπήρχε μια σόμπα για θέρμανση. Από την σόμπα αυτή μια σωλήνα κατέβαινε μέσα στο κρησφύγετο και μέσο τις καμινάδας που έβγαινε πάνω από την στέγη, τροφοδοτούσε με αέρα το εσωτερικό.

EOKAs guerillas were ordinary people, one day civilians and the other day up in the mountain wanted by the police and the army. Many of them had nothing more than the clothes they wear at that time. Living up in the mountains was very dangerous and very risky task but they had no other choice.
